Matta provides a safe and colourful design for Coleridge
Jul 06, 2015
During the refurbishment of a children's playground within the Coleridge Recreation Grounds, Play Matta was installed to provide a safe, colourful and highly durable surfacing solution.
Background
Coleridge Recreation Ground is a public garden and sports facility located near Davy Road in Cambridge. Serving local residents of all ages, its sport and recreational facilities include a football field, tennis court, ping-pong tables, children’s playground, paddling pool and splash pad.
The Problem
Working with local residents, Cambridge City Council determined that the grounds would benefit from the installation of a new multi-use games area located next to the playground. It was also decided that the existing children’s playground would be refurbished as part of the project.
Having previously used wet pour EPDM for the children’s play area, the client required a safety surfacing solution that was not only attractive, but more durable, hard-wearing and easier to maintain.

The Solution
Play Matta was installed under a 4 metre high dragon structure, which was created especially as part of the refurbishment scheme, as well as a traditional play area featuring swings and a carousel. Originally chosen for its durability, Cambridge City Council was also attracted to Play Matta’s range of 16 colours, providing endless design options.
The nearly installed Dragon play feature, a 28 metre long unit, had varying shock pad depths to allow for a range of Critical Fall Heights. During the installation, Matta Products ensured the finished level was the same as the base depth to accommodate the different pads.
Due to its anti surface, Pathway Matta was also used to create a safe snaky entrance path.

The Benefits
Declan O’Halloran, the Asset Manager during the duration of the project, said: “Matta Products was the preferred choices for three significant areas of a popular destination play space at Coleridge, to the East of the city.
"Previous experience has found their products to be extremely durable, often out-lasting alternative surfacing, and relatively easy to maintain. The ability to create unusual patterns and shapes from the interesting colour palate was also a significant reason for using Play Matta, and this became integral to the design.”
